Best Clothing for Cycling in Different Seasons
If you’re into outdoor cycling, you should be in the right clothes. You want to ensure your comfort, convenience and protection in both summer and winter so that you can enjoy longer rides. You will want more layers of insulation in winter and more ventilation in summer.

Your basic cycling gear will be similar in both warmer and cooler weather. You will, however, take into account the differences in materials, styles, and layers.

Cycling Tights, Knickers and Socks

You have to be careful about wearing a cycling jacket because it can easily become warmer or cooler than you expected. You have to choose a cycling jacket based on two considerations – will it keep you warm and dry?
You will find jackets that will provide both warmth and dryness but keep these things in mind:
- You will warm up from your physical exertions during the ride. Avoid overdressing with too many layers.
- You should use a waterproof cycling jacket in case rain is in the weather forecast. You can keep dry in wet conditions because of the jacket’s forward-leaning sleeves, longer back, and oversized hood.
- You have to invest in a water-resistant or waterproof jacket since these offer good wind protection for year-round use.
You should also pay attention to your socks and shoes. You don’t want to suffer from blisters on your ankles, calves and feet from inappropriate footwear since these will also affect your performance.
Proper Layering for Winter Cycling
You have to properly layer your clothing for winter riding because maintaining your body’s core temperature is important. If you’re too warm or too cold, your body wastes energy in regulating its core temperature.
You will become tired faster, which will affect your enjoyment of the activity or your chances of winning.
There are three components of layering:
- The base layer is the next-to-the-skin garment, which pulls moisture away from your skin. Its main purposes are: first, to keep your skin from becoming wet and cold; and second, to help in regulating your body temperature. You will then not get too warm or too cold.
- The mid layer acts as the insulating layer between the base layer and the outer layer shell. It’s arguably the most important layer for two reasons: first, it creates two pockets of warm air for effective temperature regulation and comfort level; and second, it moves moisture away from your body.
- The outer layer shell provides protection against the wind and rain. You can keep riding even when there’s a chill in the air from the combined wind and rain, perhaps light snow in the air.
You have to experiment with the types of cycling clothing worn for the current and forecast weather conditions in your area. Your choice in layers, for example, will be different in Chicago and in Washington, D.C. in winter.
